Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek on base :
Explore the less
traversed Eastern mountainous regions of Nepa
Amazing time walking through the diverse flora and fauna
Meditate in Ramtang and Oktang Monasteries after your tiring
walks
Have an amazing time on the lap of the giant peaks
The Kanchenjunga Circuit trek visits both the north and
south base camps of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world at
8,586m.
Due to the fact this is a remote area trek, a good level of
fitness and some trekking experience is desirable. Yet despite of its
remoteness, trekkers gain insight into peoples’ way of life and can visit
Ramtang and Oktang Monasteries.
On the way, the landscape is filled with rivers; waterfalls;
green meadows; rhododendron, birch and pine forests; the Yalung Glacier, and of
course, visitors are accompanied on the route by the majestic mountains.
Kanchenjunga itself lies on the far eastern side of Nepal,
near the border with Sikkim, a tiny Himalayan state in the north-eastern part
of India. Until mid-1800, it was thought Kanchenjunga was the highest peak in
the world.
This area was closed to trekkers until the mid-1980. Today
the region is protected by the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and a special
trekking permit is required. With these restrictions, the beautiful and unique flora
and fauna of this area is still in pristine condition today.
With regards to the mountains themselves, in addition to the
main peak of Kanchenjunga, there are four subsidiary summits exceeding 8,000m,
the most important being Kanchenjunga West, also known as Yalung Kang (8,505m).
Kanchenjunga (8,586m), ‘The Five Great Treasure Houses of
Snow’, is the world’s third-highest mountain and is situated in the
Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, an area that comprises pristine forests, alpine
meadows and high altitude wetlands alongside this magnificent and spectacular
Himalayan massif.
The mountain forms
Nepal’s eastern border with Sikkim and this region is one of the least
populated in Nepal. You will trek up through lush, green, semi-tropical Rai and
Limbu villages in the mid-hills, and remote Tibetan villages higher up in the
semi-arid plateaus at the foot of the mountain.
This remote,
stunningly beautiful and ecologically diverse conservation area is jointly
managed by local communities and the WWF and is home to the endangered and
secretive snow leopard and red panda, as well as the vulnerable Himalayan black
bear, clouded leopard, and Assamese macaque.
This circular trek
takes you up through lush valleys full of seasonal flowers that receive the
heaviest monsoon rains throughout the Himalayan range, north into spectacular
high alpine landscapes full of woodlands and mountain streams. You will then trek up over high passes to
both Kanchenjunga Base Camp and Ramche Yalung Base Camp, before heading back
down again to lower elevations and returning to the trek’s start point at
Taplejung. Amazing Nepal Journey Organizing the trip with full experience sine
a long time with all guest Satisfaction.
WHAT IS THE FLORA AND FAUNA LIKE ON THE KANCHENJUNGA BASE
CAMP TREK?
The trek starts from the subtropical region of Taplejung,
through beautiful temperate forests of maple, chestnut and birch trees. Even
though farming is less productive in the hilly regions, you can still see
terraced fields around these lower regions.
Around Chitre you enter the upper temperate climatic
vegetation of rhododendron, pine, firs, and orchids. Above here and across the
Sele La (pass) towards Ghunsa begins the more subalpine and alpine climatic
zone with shallow and dwarf shrubs and open meadows. Base Camp at 5143m is at the snowline with a
rocky and icy landscape.
Snow Leopard, Himalayan Asian black bear and red pandas have
been seen in this region although they are obviously shy and difficult to spot.
Blood pheasant (below) and the Chestnut-breasted partridge are common bird
species.
WHAT ETHNIC GROUPS WILL YOU MEET ON THE KANCHENJUNGA BASE
CAMP TREK?
This trek explores Nepal’s border with Sikkim and Tibet. The
lower region has a mixed community following Hinduism dominated by ethnic group
Limbu (below) and the Rai people who follow animist beliefs. The upper region
has a distinct community of Bhote and Sherpa people who follow Buddhism.
WHERE IS KANCHENJUNGA?
The third highest mountain in the world is in the Great
Himalaya Range on the border between Sikkim state, northeastern India, and
eastern Nepal, and 46 miles (74 km) north-northwest of Darjeeling.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TREK TO KANCHENJUNGA?
You can trek the Kanchenjunga Circuit in April, May and
early June, and during October and November to early December. During these
trekking seasons expect generally stable weather, clear skies, warm days and
cool nights. The Kanchenjunga trek is quiet, you will meet other people on the
trails and in the lodges but far fewer than in the central region.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE KANCHENJUNGA REGION?
Spectacular views of the Kanchenjunga range from the summer
retreat town of Darjeeling (in India) first raised the curiosity of early
British explorers. Then, due to a porous border, easy access to eastern Nepal
from bordering Sikkim made adventures to the area possible as early as 1848
(whilst the rest of Nepal was closed to foreign visitors for another 100 years
until the 1950s).
For many years Kanchenjunga was considered the highest
mountain in the world, until 1856, when Peak XV, (Mount Everest) was
discovered. Kanchenjunga literally translates to "Five Great Treasures in
the Snow".
There are five peaks within the Kanchenjunga range, and
local people believe that each of the five peaks is a repository of different
treasures: gold, silver, gems, grains and sacred texts. Kanchenjunga is a
sacred mountain, therefore the first summiteers stopped a few meters short of
the summit in 1955.
WHAT IS KANCHENJUNGA PEAK LIKE?
Mount Kanchenjunga lies on the eastern end of Nepal, near
the border with Sikkim, a tiny Himalayan state in the north-east of India.
Until the mid 1800s Kanchenjunga was thought to be the highest peak in the
world but it is actually the third and it is a sacred peak which means
mountaineers generally avoid standing on the summit itself.
The main peak is 8586 metres, but the massif has four
subsidiary summits exceeding 8000 metres, including Kanchenjunga West, also
known as Yalung Kang (8,505m). Around the massif and seen on the trek are
around twenty peaks more than 7000 meters high, the highest being Kambachen
(7,903m) and also including legendary Jannu (7,710m) and Jongsong (7,483m),
Kabru (7,353m), Tent Peak (7,365m) and the Twins (7,350m).
Five major glacial systems are found in this huge cluster of
peaks and of these Zumu, Talung and Rathong flow into Sikkim while to the west,
the Kanchenjunga and Yalung glaciers descend into the Tamor River of Nepal.

We drive via Mechi Highway and from Kanyam viewing the tea cultivation on the way toward Taplejung or Illam from where the trek to Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek begins.
We will have our breakfast and catch the local jeep and begin our second-day ride to reach our destination for the day, Ranipul / Sekathum. Usually, trekkers prefer to walk up to Sekathum from Taplejung but by making our itinerary short and utilizing the available services in the region, we reach Sekathum two days before other trekkers. The drive will take us through Mitlung, Chirwa, ....and several other villages along the Tamor Nadi. There is the Kanchenjunga National Park entry point on our way, where our permits are checked and allowed to move forward to Sekathum.
After long drive and will start real trekking to Sekhathum. Our journey begins with an ascent along the Ghunsa Khola and walking through over many bridges along the way, exploring through verdant trees, the little settlements of Jonggim, and Ghaiyabari reaching Amjilosa.
After breakfast start trekking to Gyabla which is also known as Kyapra . We continue to move in our path through a dense forest and trail without a Human settlement. Today, we can spot Red Pandas during our hike on the Kanchenjunga Trail, some occasion . After the uphill climb, we get to view the magnificent view of the mountains and several waterfalls on the way. We slowly make our way and reach Gyabla village.
The walk through the woodlands with a wide range of flora and fauna leads us to the Phale village. Continuing the trek at a pace, we will reach Ghunsa village. Many trekkers stop at Ghunsa for acclimatization, but we have our acclimation day at Khambachen.
We will have our breakfast and begin the gradual ascent through an open pine forest and also have the chance to spot blue sheep and snow leopards. The trail passes through landslide-prone areas. We see the spectacular view of Mt. Jannu, encounter the green glacier valleys, and finally reach Khambachen village.
We rest at Khambachen after several days of walking. For the adjustment of the body to the altitude, we will have a short hike to nearby glaciers, viewpoints, and lakes. We can meet numerous trekkers in Khambachen returning from and traveling to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.
We move ahead to the trail of the Kanchenjunga glacier. We can meet the trekkers in the main trekking season walking toward and returning from the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp on this track. We move through the Ramdang and come across the Ramdang Monastery. We are on the difficult trail, now at the junction of the Lhonak and Kanchenjunga glaciers. Walking forward, we reach the tiny settlement of Lhonak with a few teahouses.
we will hike to the north base camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga, which is also known as Pang Pema. We will climb gradually following the moraines through the trail and reach Kanchenjunga Base Camp. The prayer flags around and the mesmerizing towering third-highest mount Kanchenjunga is the reward after multiple days of trekking. We will return to Lhonak for an overnight stay.
Rejoicing the views of the Himalayas and leaving behind the Kanchenjunga Base Camp, retracing the track, we arrive at Ghunsa. The Kanchenjunga trail gives us memories of walking passing the stone huts, soaring mountain peaks, rocky fields nearby the trails, rock-falling zones, etc.
We arrive at Sele Le, leaving the trail to Gyabla. There is a chance to see the snow leopards as we pass through the dense forest. There are isolated human settlements with few teahouses which are open only in the main trekking season. When there is heavy snowfall there is no other way connecting the pathway to reach South Base Camp until Sekathum. If the teahouses are closed and still we can cross the passes then, we can even reach Tseram in a day cutting a day off from our planned itinerary.
Leaving Sele Le Pass, we will hike up to the high-altitude passes, Sinion La (4440m.|2758ft.), then Mirgin La (4480m.|2783ft.) and Sinelapche Bhanjyang (4645m.|2886ft.). We will see the spectacular panoramic view of Mt. Jannu, Everest, Makalu, Baruntse, Chamlang, and Kanchenjunga during our ascent. We descend to Tseram and stay overnight over there.
after early morning breakfast, we head forward through the Yalung glacier getting higher and close to the vistas. Passing by the Yalung which provides views of Rathong (6682m) and Kabru (7412m), we will stop for lunch at Ramche. We will hike to Oktang/ Okhordung the viewpoint of Yalung Base Camp or Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. Enjoying the closer view of three summits of Mt. Kanchenjunga 8420m, 8586m, and 8474m, and other towering peaks, exploring this untouched, unexplored by many trekkers, Kanchenjunga Base Camp, we will return to Tseram.
The elevated snow-capped mountains behind us and the walk through the rhododendron forests give us tranquility. Our trek starts downhill and ends at Tortong passing through Simbuwa Khola with enchanting views of the Himalayas en route. We will stay overnight at Tortong.
From Tortong, we persist to descend to the Amji Khola passing through Lasiya/Lamite Bhanjyang (3415m) and Dhupi Bhanjyang (2665m). Walking past the steep slope area, we reach Yamphudin village. There is the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area checkpost in Yamphudin, where our permits are checked if we had begun our trek with Kanchenjunga South Base Camp first.
After having breakfast in Yamphudin, we start exploring beautiful landscapes through the trails, and trekking alongside the pathway of Kabeli Khola. Leaving the mountain villages, we will take a drive to Kanyam, a beautiful place surrounded by tea gardens. Along the way to Kanyam, we can see the cardamom and tea cultivation through our windows. Keeping the bittersweet memories of the trek at the high altitudes, we are now at the lowlands. You can encounter many local tourists as Kanyam is a popular destination with tea gardens.
We will have our breakfast and explore the green tea cultivation area for a while. Then, we will have a 2-3 hour drive to Bhadrapur.
We will have a 45 to 50 minutes flight from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu in the late afternoon. We will escort you to your hotel and invite you to a farewell dinner with our management team in the evening.
