Overview

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is regarded as one of the most iconic and diverse trekking routes in the world. Known for its breathtaking scenery, cultural richness, and wide variety of landscapes, it offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The trek circles the majestic Annapurna Massif, home to Annapurna I (8,091m), the 10th highest mountain in the world and the first 8000-meter peak to be summited. Along this route, trekkers pass through lush subtropical forests, picturesque rice terraces, alpine meadows, arid high mountain passes, and deep river valleys, witnessing dramatic changes in geography, climate, and culture.

The journey traditionally begins with an overland drive to Bhulbhule in the Marshyangdi Valley and gradually ascends toward the high Himalayan desert near Manang, before crossing the famed Thorong-La Pass (5,416m). From there, the trail descends to Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists, before heading toward Jomsom or Beni depending on your chosen itinerary. At Amazing Nepal Journey Treks, we’ve been organizing this classic route for over two decades, offering both the full circuit and customized options for those with limited time. Whether you finish your trek in Jomsom with a short flight or continue further to Tatopani and Poon Hill, we ensure every traveler gets the best out of the Annapurna experience with safety, comfort, and expert guidance.

Cultural Diversity and Natural Beauty on the Trail

One of the most enriching aspects of the Annapurna Circuit Trek is its incredible cultural diversity. As trekkers ascend through the valleys, they pass through a variety of ethnic settlements, including Gurung, Magar, Thakali, and Tibetan-influenced communities. Each village has its own distinct customs, architecture, language, and festivals, making the trek not just a physical adventure, but a deep cultural journey. In Manang, you’ll encounter Tibetan Buddhist influence with intricately carved prayer wheels and ancient monasteries perched on the hillsides. Further down in the lower region, Gurung and Magar villages showcase vibrant traditions and welcoming hospitality.

The natural surroundings are equally impressive. From the tropical forests and cascading waterfalls of the lower trail to the arid, windswept plateaus of the Mustang region, the ever-changing landscape keeps the trek visually stimulating. Trekkers also walk alongside massive glaciers and beneath towering peaks such as Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, and Dhaulagiri. The diversity of terrain means every day presents new sights and challenges, making the Annapurna Circuit suitable for those who truly want to experience the breadth of Nepal’s Himalayan beauty. Amazing Nepal Journey carefully selects teahouses, rest points, and acclimatization spots to allow you to enjoy both nature and culture at the perfect pace.

Best Time for Annapurna Circuit Trek

The ideal seasons to embark on the Annapurna Circuit Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These periods offer the most favorable weather—clear skies, stable temperatures, and excellent visibility of the mountains. During spring, the trails are adorned with blooming rhododendrons and vibrant wildflowers, while autumn provides crisp air and vibrant landscapes after the monsoon rains have cleansed the valleys. Both seasons also offer better trail conditions and reduced risks of landslides or snow blockages at higher altitudes.

Trekking in winter (December to February) is possible for those well-prepared for cold conditions, but the Thorong-La Pass may be closed due to snow. Similarly, monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rains, muddy trails, and leeches in the lower regions, along with poor mountain visibility. However, in rain-shadow areas like Mustang and Upper Manang, monsoon treks are still feasible. At Amazing Nepal Journey Treks, we monitor weather forecasts regularly and assist clients in selecting the best time based on their availability and preferences, ensuring safety and a rich trekking experience throughout the year.

Annapurna Circuit Trekking Difficulty

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is considered moderate to challenging, depending on your fitness level and the duration of your itinerary. The main challenge comes from the altitude—especially when crossing Thorong-La Pass at 5,416 meters. However, with proper acclimatization and pacing, the trek is achievable for most people in good physical condition. The average walking duration is 5 to 7 hours a day, with some longer days during the high pass crossing. Rest days in Manang and Lower Pisang are built into the itinerary to help trekkers adapt to the thinning air.

The well-maintained trails, availability of teahouses, and the support of experienced guides and porters make the Annapurna Circuit much more accessible today than in the past. That said, the trek still demands mental resilience, good health, and a spirit of adventure. Amazing Nepal Journey Treks provides pre-trek training advice, customizable pacing, and expert guidance every step of the way, ensuring that trekkers can conquer the circuit safely while enjoying every aspect of the Himalayan wilderness and local hospitality.

Trip Itinerary

Welcome to Nepal! Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a friendly representative from Amazing Nepal Journey will receive you and transfer you to your hotel in the heart of the capital. After check-in, you can relax or explore the bustling streets of Thamel—a vibrant area filled with shops, restaurants, and trekking gear stores. This is your first opportunity to immerse yourself in Nepalese culture and prepare mentally for the adventure ahead. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner where you’ll meet your guide and fellow trekkers. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Spend the day discovering Kathmandu’s rich cultural heritage while finalizing your trekking arrangements. With a local guide, visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath Stupa. These ancient landmarks offer spiritual insight into Nepal’s diverse religious traditions. Later, attend a detailed briefing about the Annapurna Circuit trek, including altitude awareness, packing tips, and route orientation. This is also the day to double-check your gear or rent any last-minute items. After an informative and inspiring day, return to your hotel to rest and get ready for the journey into the Himalayas.

Your Himalayan journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Shange, a small settlement on the banks of the Marsyangdi River. The drive takes around six hours, winding through terraced hillsides, remote villages, and lush valleys. As you leave the chaos of the city behind, the air becomes fresher and the mountains loom closer. Shange marks the starting point of your trek and offers a quiet and peaceful setting to relax for the evening. Enjoy your first night in the mountains in a teahouse run by local families. Overnight in Shange.

Your trek kicks off with a steady climb alongside the Marsyangdi River. You’ll pass rice terraces, suspension bridges, and traditional Gurung villages. The trail rises through forests and stone stairways, eventually reaching the beautiful village of Tal. Located on a wide river plain, Tal is known for its cascading waterfalls and tranquil ambiance. This area marks the entry into the Manang District and is characterized by a shift in both culture and landscape. Tal’s riverside lodges offer stunning views and a well-deserved rest after a full day of trekking. Overnight in Tal.

Today’s trek involves several ups and downs as the trail winds through dense forests, high cliffs, and dramatic waterfalls. You’ll pass through charming villages like Dharapani and Bagarchhap, where Tibetan influence becomes more prominent. As you ascend, the air gets cooler and the scenery becomes increasingly alpine. Chame, the district headquarters of Manang, is a well-developed village offering hot showers, bakeries, and incredible views of Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. This is an excellent spot to rest and acclimate further. Enjoy a hearty meal and a cozy bed in a teahouse. Overnight in Chame.

Leaving Chame, the trail climbs through pine forests and crosses several suspension bridges over roaring rivers. Today’s highlight is the awe-inspiring view of Paungda Danda, a massive rock face rising dramatically above the trail. As you continue, the valley opens, and the terrain becomes more barren, giving way to high-altitude landscapes. Pisang, your destination, sits in the shadow of Annapurna II and is split into lower and upper villages. The upper section offers better views and a more traditional feel. Spend the evening enjoying mountain hospitality and warm tea. Overnight in Pisang.

Take the high route through Upper Pisang and Ngawal for breathtaking views and cultural richness. This trail passes ancient monasteries, traditional homes, and prayer wheels, showcasing strong Tibetan Buddhist influence. As you ascend, panoramic views of Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak unfold. Arriving in Manang, you’ll find a bustling village with bakeries, teahouses, and a backdrop of towering peaks. The atmosphere here is lively yet peaceful. Take time to relax and prepare for the acclimatization day ahead. Overnight in Manang.

This rest day is crucial for proper acclimatization before heading above 4,000 meters. You can hike to Gangapurna Lake or visit the hilltop viewpoint for expansive views of Annapurna II, III, and Tilicho Peak. Another popular option is the hike to Bhojo Gompa or the Ice Lake for those wanting more of a challenge. Learn about altitude sickness prevention from local Himalayan Rescue Association clinics. Spend the afternoon enjoying the calm atmosphere of Manang, sipping tea and watching yaks graze nearby. Overnight in Manang.

Leaving the tree line behind, the trail leads through alpine meadows and rocky terrain, gaining altitude steadily. The landscape becomes more rugged and remote, with grazing yaks and scattered stone huts. Ledar is a small cluster of teahouses with stunning views of the Chulu range. At this altitude, it’s essential to trek slowly, hydrate, and rest well. Enjoy a hearty meal and prepare for the final push toward the Thorong La Pass in the coming days. Overnight in Ledar.

Today’s trek is short but steep. Depending on your fitness and weather conditions, you can either stop at Phedi (base camp) or push on to High Camp. The trail involves navigating narrow ridges and loose rocks, so caution is advised. Reaching High Camp gives you a head start for tomorrow’s pass crossing but requires extra acclimatization. Lodges are basic but cozy, and the views of the snowy peaks under starlight are spectacular. Early dinner and early bed—tomorrow is the big day. Overnight in Phedi or High Camp.

Today is the most challenging yet rewarding part of the trek. Start before dawn to cross Thorong La, one of the highest trekking passes in the world. The ascent is long and steady, with breathtaking views at the summit. After celebrating your achievement at the prayer flag-draped pass, descend steeply to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists alike. Explore the Muktinath temple complex and marvel at its eternal flame and water spouts. Rest and enjoy your first night on the Mustang side of the Himalayas. Overnight in Muktinath.

Descend through the arid landscapes of Mustang, stopping for lunch at the picturesque village of Kagbeni. This ancient settlement offers cobbled lanes, medieval alleys, and a strong Tibetan culture. From here, follow the Kali Gandaki River to Marpha, a charming village known for its whitewashed houses, apple orchards, and local brandy. Enjoy exploring this peaceful community and savoring fresh apple pie at one of its bakeries. Overnight in Marpha.

The trail continues along the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the world’s deepest canyon, with views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri towering above. Descend gradually through pine forests and scattered villages to reach Ghasa, a warm and lush area with a tropical feel. This region is rich in birdlife and greenery. Ghasa is a small and welcoming village with cozy lodges and mountain charm. Overnight in Ghasa.

Today’s trail winds through beautiful forests and terraced fields to reach Tatopani, which means "hot water" in Nepali. This village is famous for its natural hot springs, a perfect reward after weeks of trekking. Soak your sore muscles in the warm mineral baths while enjoying views of the surrounding hills. The local food and relaxed vibe here are sure to reinvigorate you. Overnight in Tatopani.

Prepare for a long uphill day. The trail climbs steadily through rhododendron forests and charming villages such as Sikha and Chitre. As you gain altitude, the temperature drops and the forest becomes denser. Arriving in Ghorepani, you’ll be greeted by stunning views of Annapurna South and Dhaulagiri. This is the base for the famous Poon Hill sunrise hike. Overnight in Ghorepani.

Wake up before dawn for a short hike to Poon Hill to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The panoramic views of snow-capped peaks glowing in early light are unforgettable. After descending to Ghorepani for breakfast, continue the trek downhill through terraced fields and forested trails to Tikhedhunga. The path is steep in places but the scenery remains spectacular. Relax in the village and enjoy your last night on the trail. Overnight in Tikhedhunga.

The final day of trekking is mostly downhill, following mountain streams through villages, farmland, and lush forests. Arrive at Nayapul, where your vehicle will be waiting for a scenic drive to Pokhara. This lakeside city offers comfortable hotels, cafes, and spectacular views of the Annapurna massif. Celebrate the successful completion of your trek with a relaxing evening by Phewa Lake, perhaps enjoying a boat ride or a delicious meal. Overnight in Pokhara.

Travel back to Kathmandu by tourist bus through beautiful countryside. The journey passes rolling hills, rivers, and rural villages, providing one last chance to see the diverse landscapes of Nepal. Arrive in Kathmandu by late afternoon and transfer to your hotel. Spend your final evening in Nepal enjoying local cuisine, shopping for souvenirs, or simply resting. Reflect on your incredible adventure with your trekking team. Overnight in Kathmandu.

After breakfast, transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight. Take with you the memories of majestic peaks, warm mountain hospitality, and the accomplishment of completing the Annapurna Circuit. Thank you for choosing Amazing Nepal Journey for your trekking experience. We hope to welcome you back for future adventures in the Himalayas. Safe travels!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most legendary and diverse treks in the world, offering a journey through Nepal’s most dramatic landscapes—from subtropical forests and rice terraces to high alpine terrain and the trans-Himalayan Mustang region. The full trek with Amazing Nepal Journey takes 19 days, starting in Kathmandu and circling around the Annapurna Massif, crossing the iconic Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and ending in the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara. This trek is famous for its incredible cultural variety, natural beauty, and unmatched mountain views.

Your adventure begins on Day 1 with arrival in Kathmandu (1,380m), followed by sightseeing and pre-trek preparation on Day 2. On Day 3, you drive to Shange and begin trekking the next day toward Tal, then gradually ascend through Chame, Pisang, and Manang via Ngawal, offering scenic views and cultural encounters. An acclimatization day in Manang on Day 8 helps prepare you for the high-altitude sections. From there, you continue to Ledar, High Camp, and eventually cross the challenging Thorong La Pass (5,416m) on Day 11, reaching the sacred town of Muktinath. The trail then descends through Kagbeni, Marpha, Ghasa, and Tatopani, where natural hot springs await. You then ascend to Ghorepani, enjoy sunrise views from Poon Hill, and finally trek to Tikhedhunga before returning to Pokhara and Kathmandu.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is rated moderate to challenging. While no technical climbing is involved, the trek involves long walking days (5–8 hours), high elevations, and varying terrain. The most strenuous day is the crossing of Thorong La Pass, which requires an early start and a steady pace due to the high altitude. With proper acclimatization, preparation, and the support of our experienced guides, trekkers in good physical condition can complete this rewarding journey successfully.

During the trek, you will stay in teahouses or mountain lodges, which offer basic but clean accommodation, usually with twin-sharing rooms. Bathrooms may be shared, and amenities become more basic at higher elevations. Meals are provided at the teahouses and include typical Nepali and Tibetan fare—dal bhat, noodles, soups, pancakes, porridge, and tea. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you'll stay in comfortable hotels with modern facilities. Amazing Nepal Journey ensures quality and hygienic food and lodging throughout your trip.

Yes, all necessary trekking permits are included in the package. These include the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System). These permits are mandatory for entering and trekking in the Annapurna region. Amazing Nepal Journey handles all the paperwork and logistics for you.

The best seasons for trekking the Annapurna Circuit are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These periods offer clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and excellent views. Spring is known for blooming rhododendrons, while autumn provides crisp air and high visibility. Winter trekking is possible but much colder, especially at higher altitudes, and some parts may be snow-covered.

Yes, altitude sickness is a possibility due to the trek reaching heights above 5,000 meters. However, the itinerary is carefully designed with gradual altitude gain and two acclimatization days (Manang and Ghorepani) to reduce the risk. Our trained guides monitor your health daily and know how to recognize and respond to altitude-related symptoms. Drinking plenty of water, taking it slow, and eating well are important preventive measures.

Essential items include trekking boots, thermal layers, a down jacket, a windproof jacket, warm gloves and hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, a sleeping bag (rated for -10°C or lower), trekking poles, and a daypack. We provide a detailed packing checklist before your trip. If needed, you can rent or buy quality gear in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Yes, all road transportation by private vehicle or tourist bus between Kathmandu, Shange, Pokhara, and back to Kathmandu is included. Flights are not required for this trek unless you choose optional add-ons. Amazing Nepal Journey arranges all overland transfers so you can focus on enjoying the trail.

Solo trekkers are fully supported with a dedicated guide, while group treks offer a sociable and shared experience.
