Overview

The Mardi Himal Trek is one of Nepal’s most rewarding short treks, offering spectacular views of the Annapurna mountain range while remaining relatively uncrowded and peaceful. Nestled just east of the popular Annapurna Base Camp Trek, this route allows trekkers to experience the majestic Himalayas in a quieter, more serene environment. The trail begins at Dhampus Phedi, a short drive from Pokhara, and winds through charming Gurung villages, dense rhododendron forests, and alpine meadows before reaching the rugged highlands near Mardi Himal Base Camp. This trek is ideal for travelers who want an off-the-beaten-path experience without venturing too far from major towns.

The trail itself is a perfect mix of nature and adventure, with panoramic views of Mardi Himal (5,587m), Machapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli unfolding gradually as the altitude increases. The forested paths, particularly during spring, are filled with blooming rhododendrons and wildlife, while the higher elevations offer dramatic landscapes and endless skies. From High Camp (3,580m), trekkers can ascend to Mardi Himal Base Camp (approx. 4,500m) in about 3–4 hours, where the views are simply breathtaking. Amazing Nepal Journey Treks has been guiding clients through this magical region for over two decades, ensuring that even in its simplicity, the trek feels well-organized, safe, and profoundly inspiring.

Best Time for Mardi Himal Trek

The best seasons to trek Mardi Himal are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is generally stable, and the skies remain clear, offering exceptional mountain views throughout the journey. Spring is especially beautiful with forests of blooming rhododendron, magnolia, and other wildflowers painting the trails with vibrant colors. The fresh greenery after winter and the pleasant temperatures make it an ideal time for both novice and experienced trekkers.

In autumn, the air is crisp and dry after the monsoon rains, providing crystal-clear visibility of the mountains and fewer weather disruptions. Temperatures are moderate, and the trail conditions are at their best. While winter trekking (December to February) is possible, the cold can be intense at higher elevations and snowfall may make the upper trails inaccessible. Monsoon season (June to August) is typically avoided due to slippery trails, leeches, and reduced visibility. Amazing Nepal Journey Treks monitors trail and weather conditions year-round and helps clients choose the best time based on their preferences and safety considerations.

Mardi Himal Trekking Difficulty

The Mardi Himal Trek is considered a moderate trek, making it suitable for most people with a reasonable level of fitness. It’s perfect for beginners seeking their first Himalayan adventure, as well as for experienced trekkers looking for a quieter route. The trail includes gradual ascents and some steep sections, especially as you approach High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp, but it does not involve technical climbing or extremely high altitudes like some other Himalayan treks. Most days involve 4 to 6 hours of trekking, making it a manageable yet rewarding adventure.

The elevation gain is steady, which helps with acclimatization, though trekkers should still be mindful of altitude-related symptoms once above 3,000 meters. Teahouses are available along the route offering food and basic lodging, and the trail is well-marked and increasingly well-serviced. With Amazing Nepal Journey Treks, you'll benefit from knowledgeable local guides, proper itinerary planning, and reliable logistics. This ensures a comfortable and safe journey even for those with limited trekking experience. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the Annapurna region’s beauty without the crowds or the demands of higher, more strenuous trails.

Trip Itinerary

Welcome to Nepal! Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Amazing Nepal Journey will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. Kathmandu, the vibrant capital city of Nepal, is rich in history, culture, and spiritual heritage. After checking in, you can relax or take a short walk through the lively streets of Thamel, a popular hub for travelers. In the evening, meet your trekking guide for a detailed briefing about the Mardi Himal Trek, where you’ll go over gear, itinerary, and safety precautions. This day gives you a chance to adjust to the time zone and elevation before heading into the mountains. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

After breakfast, you will either take a scenic 25-minute flight or a 6-hour overland drive to Pokhara, Nepal’s adventure capital. The flight offers panoramic views of the Himalayas, while the drive allows you to witness Nepal’s rural beauty along the Trishuli River. Once in Pokhara, check in to your lakeside hotel and spend the afternoon exploring the peaceful surroundings of Phewa Lake, where colorful boats float with a backdrop of Annapurna peaks. You can also visit local sites like Davis Falls, the International Mountain Museum, or simply relax in a lakeside café. Pokhara offers a serene and picturesque environment before your trek begins. Overnight in Pokhara.

This morning, a short drive brings you to Kande, the starting point of your trek. From here, the trail climbs gently through rhododendron and oak forests to Australian Camp and then onward to Pothana, offering your first glimpses of the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). Continuing through terraced fields and pine-scented trails, you’ll reach Pitam-Deurali, a peaceful forest village perched on a ridge. The trek is moderately paced, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. The surrounding scenery is lush and tranquil, with panoramic views of the Modi Khola valley below. Overnight in a comfortable teahouse in Pitam-Deurali.

Leaving the main Annapurna trail behind, today’s hike takes you deep into the forest as you begin the true Mardi Himal route. The trail winds through dense rhododendron and maple forests, filled with birdsong and occasional glimpses of the Himalayas through the trees. The gradual ascent is peaceful and quiet, as this section is less crowded than other trekking routes. After 4 to 5 hours of walking, you’ll arrive at Forest Camp, a serene clearing surrounded by woods. Basic teahouses here offer hearty meals and warm hospitality. The silence of the forest and crisp mountain air make for a peaceful night’s rest. Overnight at Forest Camp.

Today’s journey is shorter, allowing for a slow and steady ascent. The trail continues through dense alpine forest, gradually emerging into more open terrain. As you gain elevation, the trees become sparser and views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and the Mardi Himal ridge begin to dominate the landscape. After around three hours, you’ll reach Low Camp, a small settlement with just a few lodges and unbeatable mountain views. The sense of remoteness increases, and you’ll start to feel truly immersed in the Himalayas. Spend the afternoon relaxing, taking photos, or enjoying tea with a view. Overnight in Low Camp.

As you climb higher, the landscape becomes even more dramatic. The forest gives way to alpine shrubs, and the views open up dramatically on all sides. Today’s short trek is rewarding, with continuous views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre. Upon reaching High Camp, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. High Camp is located on a ridge with expansive views and basic yet cozy teahouses. Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and preparing for tomorrow’s early hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp. Enjoy the peaceful, high-altitude setting. Overnight in High Camp.

Wake up early for the most rewarding day of the trek—a day hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp. The trail climbs along a narrow ridge, with the dramatic Annapurna Sanctuary on one side and steep drops on the other. After 3–4 hours of ascent, you’ll reach the base camp at 4,500m, located right beneath the towering south face of Mardi Himal and Machhapuchhre. The views are simply breathtaking. After soaking in the majestic surroundings, descend back to High Camp, or continue to Low Camp for a warmer overnight stay. The return journey is just as scenic, with incredible light and shifting views throughout the day. Overnight at High or Low Camp.

Today you descend off the ridge through dense forest, terraced fields, and charming traditional villages. The trail leads to Sidhing, a peaceful settlement far from the more commercial trekking routes. It offers a unique look into traditional Nepalese rural life. From here, a jeep will pick you up and drive you back to Pokhara, which takes about 2 to 3 hours. Upon arrival, check into your lakeside hotel and enjoy the comforts of the city—hot showers, real coffee, and delicious food. Celebrate the completion of your trek with some well-deserved rest. Overnight in Pokhara.

After breakfast, return to Kathmandu either by a scenic 25-minute flight or a 6-hour road journey, depending on your preference. The drive passes through charming towns and river valleys, while the flight offers a final aerial glimpse of the mountains. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. Spend your final evening shopping for souvenirs or revisiting favorite places in the city. Amazing Nepal Journey will host a farewell dinner if time allows. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Today marks the end of your incredible journey to Mardi Himal. After breakfast, our team will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight. As you board your plane, take with you unforgettable memories of the Himalayan landscapes, friendly locals, and the peaceful solitude of the Mardi Himal trail. Thank you for choosing Amazing Nepal Journey. We look forward to trekking with you again in the future!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mardi Himal Trek is a scenic and less-crowded alternative to the more popular treks in Nepal’s Annapurna region. It offers close-up views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli, while passing through dense forests, alpine ridges, and traditional villages. With Amazing Nepal Journey, this trek is completed in 10 days, starting with your arrival in Kathmandu and culminating with a panoramic day hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m). This trek is ideal for those looking for a quieter route with rich biodiversity and spectacular mountain scenery.

Your journey starts with your arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m) on Day 1, followed by a short flight or drive to Pokhara on Day 2. On Day 3, you drive to Kande and begin your trek, reaching Pitam Deurali (2,100m). Over the next few days, you ascend steadily through Forest Camp, Low Camp, and High Camp, experiencing a gradual shift from lush forests to alpine landscapes. On Day 7, you embark on the highlight of the trek—an early morning hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) for awe-inspiring views of the Annapurna range, then return to High or Low Camp. On Day 8, you descend to Sidhing village, drive back to Pokhara, and end the trip with a return to Kathmandu and departure on Day 10.

The Mardi Himal Trek is considered moderate in difficulty and is suitable for beginners with good physical fitness. The trails are well-marked but include uphill and downhill sections, especially during the ascent to Base Camp. You’ll be trekking for 4 to 7 hours a day at a gradual pace. Since the elevation gain is moderate and spread out across several days, the risk of altitude sickness is minimal compared to other high-altitude treks in Nepal.

Accommodation during the trek is in simple yet comfortable teahouses, offering basic twin-sharing rooms, mostly with shared bathrooms. The lodges are clean, cozy, and managed by local families. Meals are provided at the teahouses and include traditional Nepali food like dal bhat, as well as pancakes, soups, noodles, rice, and tea. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you’ll stay in standard hotels with modern amenities. Amazing Nepal Journey selects teahouses known for quality service and hygienic meals.

Yes, the required trekking permits are included in the package. For the Mardi Himal Trek, you need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System). Our team at Amazing Nepal Journey will manage all permits and paperwork before the trek begins.

The best seasons for this trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is stable with clear skies and great visibility of the Himalayan peaks. Spring also offers vibrant rhododendron blooms along the forest trails. The winter months are colder, especially at higher elevations, while the monsoon season (June to August) brings rain and potential trail disruptions.

After your arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll take a short flight or scenic 6-hour drive to Pokhara. From Pokhara, a one-hour drive takes you to Kande, where the trek begins. At the end of the trek, you’ll descend to Sidhing, from where a private vehicle will take you back to Pokhara. You then return to Kathmandu by flight or bus, depending on your package choice.
