Overview

The Mardi Himal and Khopra Danda Trekking is a unique combination of two breathtaking trekking routes in the Annapurna region of Nepal. This two-week journey is a perfect blend of raw Himalayan adventure, remote village exploration, and extraordinary mountain vistas. Beginning with the enchanting Mardi Himal Trek, trekkers journey through lush rhododendron forests and peaceful high ridges before reaching the stunning Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500m, which offers an unparalleled close-up view of Machapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.

After completing the Mardi section, the route descends into the traditional Gurung village of Ghandruk, one of the cultural highlights of the trek. From here, the second phase of the trek begins—the scenic and less-trodden path to Khopra Danda, which offers panoramic views of Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and access to the sacred Khayar Lake, nestled at a high altitude. The trek continues through quaint villages such as Swanta and Ghorepani, ending with a sunrise hike to Poon Hill, one of Nepal’s most iconic viewpoints. Throughout the journey, trekkers experience a diversity of ecosystems, local cultures, and peaceful trails, far from the crowded tourist routes. With years of expertise, Amazing Nepal Journey Treks & Expedition ensures this trek is not only well-organized but also a deeply enriching and safe Himalayan adventure.

Best Time for Mardi Himal and Khopra Danda Trekking

The ideal time to undertake the Mardi Himal and Khopra Danda Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These periods offer the most reliable weather and clear skies, making them perfect for mountain photography and enjoying nature at its finest. In spring, the trail from Forest Camp to High Camp bursts into color with blooming rhododendrons, magnolias, and alpine flowers, creating an almost magical atmosphere. This is also a great time for birdwatching and experiencing vibrant local life in the villages.

Autumn is equally rewarding, especially after the monsoon rains have cleared the air, leaving behind incredibly sharp views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. The days are pleasantly warm for trekking, while the evenings are cool but not too harsh, even at Khopra Danda or Mardi High Camp. Winter trekking (December to February) is possible, though cold temperatures and occasional snow can make the Khayar Lake and Larkya Pass challenging. Monsoon (June to August) is best avoided due to slippery trails, leeches, and limited mountain views.

At Amazing Nepal Journey Treks, we provide expert guidance to help you choose the best trekking window based on your schedule, interests, and physical preparedness. Our team monitors seasonal changes and trail conditions closely to ensure a smooth and safe journey regardless of when you travel.

Mardi Himal and Khopra Danda Trekking Difficulty

The Mardi Himal and Khopra Danda Trek is rated as a moderate trek in terms of difficulty. While it does not involve technical climbing or high-altitude mountaineering, it does require a good level of physical fitness and stamina. The daily trekking duration ranges from 5 to 9 hours, with a mix of gentle forest trails, steep ascents, and rugged high-altitude paths. The most physically demanding days include the Mardi Base Camp hike (4,500m) and the day hike to Khayar Lake, both of which involve significant elevation gain and descent in one day.

Altitude is a consideration, especially on days at High Camp, Khopra Ridge, and during the hike to Khayar Lake. However, the itinerary designed by Amazing Nepal Journey Treks includes adequate acclimatization and rest, allowing the body to adapt gradually. Comfortable teahouse accommodations, local food, and scenic breaks along the route also help reduce fatigue and support recovery. This trek is suitable for first-time trekkers with good preparation and for seasoned hikers looking for quieter trails and remote beauty.

Our experienced guides are trained in altitude awareness and first aid, and our small group approach ensures that every trekker receives personal attention and encouragement throughout the journey. With the right mindset and support, most reasonably fit individuals can successfully complete this rewarding adventure.

Welcome to Nepal! Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a warm representative from Amazing Nepal Journey will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. Use this first day to recover from your journey and soak in the vibrant culture of Kathmandu. You’ll meet your trekking guide for an initial briefing, covering the dual-route journey, safety protocols, and gear essentials. In the evening, you can wander through the colorful streets of Thamel, enjoy a welcome dinner, or finalize any last-minute trekking gear. Overnight at your comfortable hotel.

After a relaxed breakfast, Scenic drive or optional short flight to the peaceful lakeside city of Pokhara. The drive, lasting around six hours, takes you through lush hills and alongside rivers that gradually give way to the distant Annapurna peaks. Once in Pokhara, you’ll be escorted to your hotel by the lakefront, where you can unwind or explore on foot. You’ll have the evening free to explore the lakeside bazaar, sip local coffee, or visit the lakeside viewpoint at sunset. This day provides a peaceful transition from city life to trekking life. Overnight in Pokhara.

Start early with a scenic drive to Phedi or Kande, the trailhead for the Mardi Himal route. From there, begin trekking gently uphill through charming oak and rhododendron forests. As you climb, misty valleys and glimpses of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South emerge. By lunchtime, reach Pitam Deurali—a delightful ridge with panoramic mountain views. Continue ascending to Forest Camp, nestled amid rhododendron groves at 2,600 m. The teahouse here is cozy and surrounded by lush forest and bird song. Enjoy the serenity, share stories with fellow trekkers, and prepare for the alpine heights ahead. Overnight at Forest Camp.

Your day begins with a steady climb out of the forest into alpine terrain. The trail ascends through open slopes dotted with rhododendron and bamboo until the landscape opens to distant peaks. Owing to the rising altitude, the air becomes crisp and the views more expansive—Annapurna South glistens to the west as Machhapuchhre stands proudly nearby. Each step increases altitude and anticipation until reaching High Camp at 3,600 m. This serene site, perched on a ridge, overlooks sweeping Himalayan vistas. Take time to acclimatize with tea on the deck and savor the tranquility of the high mountains. Overnight in High Camp.

Begin early to summit the ridge leading to Mardi Himal Base Camp, reaching 4,500 m. The trail is narrow and elevated, flanked by the majestic South Face of Mardi Himal and panoramic views of Annapurna I, Fishtail, Hiunchuli, and more. Spend time soaking in the solitude at this high alpine haven before descending to Low Camp at 3,050 m. The views on the return are just as spectacular in morning light. By evening, Low Camp offers comforting teahouses and shared camaraderie. Reflect on your mountain journey around a warm meal. Overnight in Low Camp.

This morning, descend through terraced woods and ridges before merging onto part of the Annapurna Circuit trail. You’ll pass through lower altitude villages and farmland before arriving in Ghandruk, a traditional Gurung community with stone houses and Buddhist chortens. This cultural highlight gives you insight into mountain village life. Ghandruk also offers beautiful mountain vistas of Annapurna South and Fishtail from its community-run teahouses. Enjoy tasty local cuisine and evening hospitality amid mountain views. Overnight in Ghandruk.

From Ghandruk, the trail ascends dramatically via stone steps through rhododendron forests. The terrain shifts as you rise above tree line, and cultural signs like mani walls and chortens become frequent. Reaching Dobato, you’re surrounded by high Himalayan views and a deeper sense of alpine wilderness. The lodge here offers a restful stay at a snow-dusted altitude, preparing you physically and mentally for the next day’s high ridge to Khopra Danda. Overnight in Dobato.

Today’s trek reaches Khopra Danda, a stunning ridge offering panoramic vistas of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and beyond. The climb is steady but rewarding, with high-altitude meadows and sweeping mountain views developing toward the top. On arriving, you’ll find charming lodges perched at 3,660 m, perfect for celebrating the journey. Sunset here is magical, as the Himalayan giants glow with alpenglow. Spend the evening stargazing and drinking warm tea in this remote alpine setting. Overnight in Khopra Danda.

This day is long and adventurous—an early start to reach sacred Khayer Lake (4,500 m). Hike through alpine meadows and moraine, passing yak herder camps and prayer flags. At the pristine emerald lake nestled among crags, take time for a moment of reflection in this remote, high-altitude beauty spot. Return through the same route to Khopra Danda in time for a hearty mountain dinner. Overnight in Khopra Danda.

Today’s descent traces forested ridges and farmland terracing before reaching the Gurung village of Swanta. You’ll pass through dense oak and rhododendron forest, descending steadily into a more fertile, green environment. Swanta’s simple teahouses offer authentic rural life—a welcome contrast after the high-mountain camp. Enjoy a meal with local hospitality and share trek stories with village families. Overnight in Swanta.

Leaving Swanta, trek again through forest and farmland, gradually ascending to the famous village of Ghorepani. Known for its natural beauty and community-run lodges, Ghorepani is nestled in thick rhododendron woodland. It’s a peaceful and popular spot for trekkers heading toward Poon Hill. Spend the afternoon relaxing and preparing for the sunrise hike tomorrow. Overnight in Ghorepani.

Rise pre‑dawn for the iconic climb up to Poon Hill (3,210 m) to witness a spectacular sunrise over Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. After breakfast in Ghorepani, descend via trails to Hile, where a vehicle will take you back to Pokhara. This final descent intersects villages and forests, completing the circuit. In Pokhara, indulge in a lakeside celebration—hot showers, local cuisine, or a boat ride on Phewa Lake. Reflect on your multi-faceted trek over dinner. Overnight in Pokhara.

After a relaxed breakfast, return to Kathmandu either by scenic morning flight or a 6-hour drive through hills and valleys. The flight brings aerial Himalayan views; the drive offers more intimate glimpses of rural Nepal. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for some well-deserved rest. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner hosted by Amazing Nepal Journey, sharing stories and celebrating your successful trek. Overnight in Kathmandu.

After breakfast, enjoy your final moments in Kathmandu before being transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward flight. Take home memories of diverse mountain routes, panoramic ridges, cultured villages, and rich Himalayan experiences. Thank you for trekking with Amazing Nepal Journey—may this be the first of many mountain adventures together. Safe travels!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mardi Himal and Khopra Danda Trek is a unique and off-the-beaten-path adventure in the Annapurna region of Nepal, combining two stunning vantage points—Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) and Khopra Ridge—into one unforgettable experience. Over 14 days, you’ll journey through lush rhododendron forests, tranquil alpine landscapes, traditional Gurung villages, and isolated ridgelines with jaw-dropping views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, and surrounding peaks. This trek is ideal for those seeking solitude, cultural immersion, and pristine Himalayan beauty without the heavy crowds of more commercial routes.

The trek begins with your arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m) for trek briefing and preparation. On Day 2, you head to Pokhara (820m) by tourist bus or flight. Day 3 marks the beginning of the trek as you drive to Phedi or Kande and hike to Forest Camp (2,600m). From there, you climb to High Camp (3,600m) and reach the highlight on Day 5—Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m)—before descending to Low Camp. You continue to the picturesque village of Ghandruk, then head deeper into the hills via Dobato to the scenic Khopra Danda Ridge (3,660m). A day is dedicated to an optional yet challenging hike to the sacred Khayer Lake (4,500m). You descend through Swanta and Ghorepani, with a sunrise hike to Poon Hill before concluding your journey in Pokhara and returning to Kathmandu for your departure.

The Mardi Himal and Khopra Danda trek is rated as moderate to challenging due to its daily trekking duration of 5–9 hours, with significant altitude gain and a high-altitude side hike to Khayer Lake. While prior trekking experience is helpful, it’s not mandatory. Trekkers should be in good physical condition, able to hike over varied terrain, and mentally prepared for basic mountain accommodations and changing weather conditions. There are no technical climbing sections, but the trek does reach elevations above 4,500m, requiring proper acclimatization and pacing.

During the trek, you’ll stay in locally-run teahouses offering basic yet clean accommodation—typically in twin rooms with shared bathrooms. As you reach more remote locations like High Camp or Khopra Ridge, facilities become more rustic, but the mountain hospitality is always warm. Meals are typically home-cooked, with options such as dal bhat (rice and lentils), soups, noodles, pancakes, Tibetan bread, and local vegetables. In Kathmandu and Pokhara, you’ll stay in well-equipped hotels with hot showers, Wi-Fi, and modern comforts.

The best times for this trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). In spring, you’ll enjoy blooming rhododendron forests, while autumn brings clear skies and excellent views of the Himalayas. The winter season (December–February) is possible but brings colder temperatures, particularly at higher elevations like Khopra Ridge. The monsoon season (June–August) is not recommended due to slippery trails and poor visibility.

Yes, trekking in the Annapurna region requires a few permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card. Amazing Nepal Journey includes all permit costs in your trek package and handles the process on your behalf before the trek begins, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free start.

Transportation is arranged by Amazing Nepal Journey. You’ll travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara either by tourist bus or domestic flight, depending on your preference. From Pokhara, a short drive takes you to Phedi or Kande, the starting point of the trek. After the trek ends at Hile, you’ll drive back to Pokhara, followed by your return journey to Kathmandu by vehicle or flight. All transportation logistics are managed as part of your package.

Safety is a top priority. Our guides are trained in first aid and altitude sickness management, and our itineraries are designed for gradual acclimatization, especially before reaching Mardi Base Camp and Khopra Ridge. We monitor trekkers' health daily and carry first aid kits. In rare cases of emergency, evacuation assistance will be arranged promptly. We provide a detailed packing checklist upon booking, and rental gear is available in Kathmandu and Pokhara if needed.
